When my son Fisher was about a year old, and I stumbled on a teaching philosophy that I think will be affecting the form of education I will be choosing for him in the future. Based on what I know so far, the concept of unschooling has become very attractive to me, and the more I think about it, the more I believe it to be the right path for Fisher and his future siblings. I have created this blog as a means to writing about the interesting journey that this experiment will likely entail, as well as to document my own evolution, my own re-education, as it were, as I follow and observe Fisher on his path to developing into the person that already exists in his genetic and spiritual make-up. I expect that letting go of my expectations and learning to trust my son’s instincts (as well as my own) will be the greatest challenge in this radical and revolutionary approach to raising and educating Fisher, but I know that it will be well worth every step as I watch him learn to think for himself and to listen to the voice that tells him the right way to go. As frightened as I am of this unconventional choice, I am also extremely excited.
